Email Scam Alert

The FAWCO Board would like to alert all of its members about an email scam going around, this one under the guise of American Express.  If you have received an email from American Express in the past few days with a link asking you to log in and update your card, please do not do it!

The following are some safety rules regarding email.  The best spam filters and anti-virus programs will do no good if we don't exercise extreme caution with email:
  1. Does the message address you by your name?  Real companies know your name and use it.
  2. NEVER click on a link in an email unless you know who sent it to you or were expecting it.  Sometimes just the act of clicking that link can download malware.
  3. If you did click on the link NEVER log in and give password information for a so-called bank account.  If you do have an account with that firm go directly to the website in your browser and log in the way you usually do if you think there might be a legitimate issue to be treated.  Do NOT access it from the email link.
Remember these kinds of scams are always trying to keep several steps ahead of the best safety programs, but a clean hard drive starts with our behavior and knowing how to treat email.
